Something exciting happened at ALI!

Gray skies and a light drizzle couldn’t dampen the spirits at Assistance League of Irvine on Monday, Feb. 20th.

A flatbed truck carrying the components of our much-anticipated (and much-needed) steel mezzanine pulled into our back parking lot. We knew something exciting is about to happen and been in the works for awhile.

Our ALI members on hand were ready to greet the delivery at 7 am cheery faced. And, why not? After two years of researching and planning, our dream of adding more space to our backroom was coming true. When installation is complete, the steel structure will virtually double our on-site work space, giving us more room to process donations of gently used clothing, household goods, toys, books and other treasures to our Thrift & Gift Shop.

Donations are the lifeblood of our operations. Why? Because sales from our Shop are the major source of funding for our philanthropic programs. So, you might say that adding a steel mezzanine to our backroom will help us better serve those Irvine families in need. And that’s really something to cheer about!

Come by and check out the new remodel once complete!

Be My Valentine <3

We want to remember all the holidays,  so this is your official reminder that Valentine’s Day is February 14.

Now if you’re like me, you just got the credit card bill for everything you bought for Christmas. Or Hanukkah. Or your Rose Bowl party. Or Chinese New Year. Or Vietnamese New Year. And you still have your Super Bowl party and your annual ski trip over President’s Day weekend coming up.

Somehow your Valentine’s Day gifts have to be squeezed into your budget. If you’re planning to propose to your true love, our advice is to be judicious without being chintzy, forego the big screen HD TV until Super Bowl LII, and spend your money on the ring instead. For all the rest of you, our advice is to check out the ALI thrift shop.   We have beautiful costume jewelry, crystal, collectibles, Valentine cards, and much, much more. You’re sure to find something that will make your significant other’s heart beat faster, without overwhelming your budget!

Behind the scenes – what really happens in Santa’s workshop!

The ALI thrift shop is stocked with holiday merchandise – lights, ornaments, Hanukkah-themed items, tabletop linens and decor, and much, much, MUCH more!

Now if this were a movie, little singing birds and mice wearing adorable clothing would have miraculously appeared in the dead of night to put these fantastic holiday treasures on the shelves.

In real life, there’s no fairy godmother with a magic wand to make this happen.  It’s all done by – you guessed it – your devoted ALI volunteers!

We collected 200 plastic storage bins of holiday merchandise during the year (thanks to all you devoted supporters of ALI who donated your holiday decorations to us!) And every donation that went into those bins was inspected, cleaned, priced, and wrapped for protection before it went into storage.  Our three “holiday merchandising managers” – Libby, Robin, and Sharyl – did this ALL YEAR LONG.  You know how you feel after you finally put the decorations away? Imagine doing that week after week!

It’s taking ALL of our volunteers, working behind the scenes, to unwrap everything in those 200 bins and put it out in the shop for you.  So every Tuesday in November, we’ll empty a few more bins and have MORE HOLIDAY ITEMS on the shelves for you.  Come by on our special November Tuesday shopping days to see what’s new!

And if you see an ALI volunteer with a name tag that reads Libby, Robin, or Sharyl – give her a big “Thank you” for filling all those bins!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE – IT’S NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY!

If you love comic books, you go to Comic-Con. If you love thrift shopping, you celebrate NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY (that would be WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17) by visiting the ALI thrift shop!

You probably won’t encounter costumed Storm Troopers or X-Men Mutants, but you’ll find plenty of other thrift shop fans who know we have the best bargains in town. All BLUE-TAGGED ITEMS WILL BE 50% OFF, so stock up on back-to-school clothes or dorm room supplies, an outfit for that Labor Day barbecue, shoes, and housewares.

We like to think our customers celebrate National Thrift Shop Day EVERY time they come into our shop. So shop with us on August 17 – and all the other days in the year, too!

Tuesday, April 21st is the iheartoc Giving Day! Will you join us?

This event is sponsored by the Orange County Community Foundation, an organization founded 25 years ago to provide grants and support to local non-profits.

We know our blog readers support us by shopping at our Thrift Store. If you’ve thought about contributing further to our programs but weren’t sure how to go about it, this is your opportunity. All the funds we raise will go right back into our own community here in Irvine, and we’ll make the most of every dollar!

(And once the 30 hours of online giving are over, be sure to stop by our Thrift Shop to check out our new spring merchandise!)

Blog readers – Help Us Win Free Advertising and continue helping the community!

we-need-your-voteThe Orange County Register is giving away $2MM in FREE ADVERTISING to non-profits! HELP US WIN some of this free advertising!

We’re competing with many other non-profits for a share of these advertising dollars in the Register’s annual “Golden Envelope” contest. With our goal to return at least 67% of our revenue back to the community, our advertising budget is very small. And we don’t have to tell you that newspaper ads are expensive. More money to spend on ads in the Register (at no cost to us!) would really help us tell our story to the community, showcase our philanthropies, recruit new members, and bring more shoppers (and donations!) to the Thrift Shop. But we need your help!

All you have to do is VOTE for Assistance League of Irvine to win. You can vote once a day between now and the end of the contest on March 31. And we’re making it so easy to vote!  Just CLICK HERE to vote and then click on the big CHECK MARK. That’s all you have to do!

Every vote counts, and we sincerely appreciate your votes. Tell your friends – tell your neighbors – and help us win!

California Dreamin’ – Thrift Shop Road Trip

If you drove by the thrift shop a couple of Mondays ago and saw a group of ALI volunteers in their blue aprons clustered around a red Thunderbird convertible in front of the shop, you weren’t California Dreamin’. That was a visit from National Assistance League’s Anne Salenger, and her “Thrift Shop Road Trip.”

Anne is traveling around the country, visiting and blogging about different Assistance League thrift stores. We were thrilled to have Anne join us for one of our Monday behind-the-scenes work sessions. Our shop was filled with eager ALI volunteers sorting, cleaning, and changing out the merchandise for the coming week. Anne’s visit came just after our Holiday Extravaganza, so the shop looked especially festive with all our holiday items. Anne was able to see first-hand the incredible effort that goes into getting the shop ready to open for the week each Wednesday morning.

While everything ALI does is for our own community, it’s inspiring for us to be able to share our story with other chapters – and to learn from them as well. We hope Anne and her “Road Trip” come back soon for another visit!
