BOOK LOVERS – CHECK OUT OUR 2FOR1 DEAL AT THE THRIFT SHOP

If you love to read, we’ve got an offer you can’t refuse. We’re currently selling TWO books for ONE DOLLAR. Mix and match hardback and paperback books – any combination! But if you buy just ONE book, it’s still going to be one dollar. So you might as well buy TWO.

We have many, many books by popular authors that are practically new. At this price you can stock up, and you’ll be ready for a cozy night of reading when the next El Nino storm hits.

This offer doesn’t apply to any books with individual price tags (for example, some specialty books will have their own price sticker) or children’s books. Children’s books are $1 for hardbound books, 50 cents for paperbacks or soft-cover books, and 25 cents for mini-books.

We also carry recent magazines at just 50 cents each.

You can use our two-for-one-dollar price for anything else – mysteries, literature, biographies, history, cookbooks, how-to books, romance novels – such a deal!

We’re ALWAYS getting new book donations, so stop in often to see what’s new on our shelves. Just remember – TWO for ONE when you’re in our book section.

Get your FALL fix at the ALI thrift shop!

Fall

Ah, the beauty of fall – red and gold leaves on the trees, the scent of wood smoke in the air, wrapping yourself in a sweater on chilly afternoons, bundling up in a blanket at football games – uh, no. Not in southern California (except maybe for the smoke in the air, and that’s another story).   But for all of you who gaze yearningly at pictures of fall color in the Maine woods – help is on the way! You can get your “FALL FIX” starting on SUPER TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, at the ALI thrift shop!

SUPER TUESDAY is an EXTRA SHOPPING DAY to welcome the fall season. The store will be COMPLETELY RESTOCKED with fall fashions, accessories, and decor to showcase our fantastic selection of fall merchandise. The thrift shop will be open from 10 am to 3 pm, so come early for the best selection.

You’ll find an abundance of exciting, cooler-weather adults’ and children’s clothing in muted colors and contemporary fabrics. Pull your fall outfits together from a huge collection of fashion-forward accessories such as scarves, hats, purses, shoes and jewelry. Bring fall into your home with seasonally-themed decor and tableware, including several sets of beautiful dishes that would be perfect for entertaining!

Once you’ve been to the thrift shop on SUPER TUESDAY, you’ll be ready to sit by the fire with some hot apple cider while the wind howls outside – well, that part might have to wait a couple of months. But you’ll be ready when the time comes!

Nothing opens the world to a child like books and the love of reading.  Studies have shown that having books in the home plays an enormous part in school success.  At Assistance League of Irvine, we’re all about making sure kids have a level playing field for success in school – and that includes books of their own.

We give each Operation School Bell student an age-appropriate book of their choice, plus a dictionary for each family.  And where do these books come from? From YOU, our generous donors and thrift shop patrons!

Each year we hold an annual Book Drive to collect new and gently-used books for these students.   The Irvine year-round schools start up in August, so our Book Drive is starting RIGHT NOW!

We supported over 800 students last year through Operation School Bell – so as you can see, we need LOTS of books! We’re particularly looking for books on the middle school or high school required reading lists.  You can drop off your book drive donations at the thrift shop during any time than we are open.

Help us encourage the love of reading in this new generation through our book drive.  And many, many thanks to ALL OF YOU who make it happen!

Thank you pops!

We celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21, and what better place to find a gift for Dad than the Thrift Shop?

It may seem that Father’s Day, like Mother’s Day, has been around forever.  But that’s not really the case.  Father’s Day celebrations were held informally in the early 20th century, and President Woodrow Wilson supported the idea of a Father’s Day holiday.  But it wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson issued a presidential proclamation that the third Sunday in June would be known as Father’s Day.  It took another six years for President Richard Nixon to name Father’s Day a permanent national observance in 1972.

Now we know that a gift from the Thrift Shop for Dad isn’t going to make up for all those years of official government neglect.  And we know that what Dad wants most is your love and respect, and to know that he’s made a difference in your life.  BUT it wouldn’t hurt to add a little something, and he’ll be pleased that you made the thrifty choice of shopping with ALI.

We have items that would suit Dads of all ages and personalities (INCLUDING a huge supply of Father’s Day cards!).  Stop in and pick out something that will make Dad feel special.  And you’ll probably save enough that you can afford to take him out for a Father’s Day dinner!

To quote James Russell Lowell:

“And what is so rare as a day in June?

Then, if ever, come perfect days . . . “

Now, he didn’t write, “Perfect SHOPPING days,” but that’s what we have at the ALI thrift shop in June. We’ve COMPLETELY re-stocked the store with summer merchandise. Summer tops and pants for women, Hawaiian shirts for men, bathing suits and cover-ups, board shorts, regular shorts. Summer pool and barbecue accessories. Fun jewelry to go with all your summer outfits. Beach books for vacation reading.

Come in and check out our housewares, kids’ clothing, toys, and home decor. And don’t forget our home office/tech area if you’re trying to organize paperwork at the end of the school year.

We can’t really say that everything in the shop is new, because it’s “gently used.”   But it’s all NEW TO YOU in June. Time for some perfect shopping days!

Help Us Celebrate 25 Years!

FullSizeRender 25 years ago (way back in 1990), members of the Assistance League of Irvine had an idea. Many of these members were teachers or retired teachers, and they believed that the arts had a vital place in children’s lives. They knew, firsthand, that many children who might not be top students academically, blossomed when they were able to express their creativity. And they wanted a way to recognize these young artists and let them know their talents were special.

This was the start of ALI’s “Young Masters Art Show!” It’s a FREE family event that has grown over the past 25 years to include over 500 pieces of children’s art, hands-on craft activities for kids, refreshments, and entertainment by award-winning Irvine high school music groups. This year it will be held on SATURDAY MAY 2 in the Irvine Civic Center Plaza from 1 to 4 pm. It’s the ONLY event of its kind in all of Orange County!

Irvine Unified School District art specialist teachers have select one piece of art from every K – 6 classroom in the district to be showcased at Young Masters. It’s amazing to see the incredible creativity of these students – you just know many of them will have careers as professional artists.

This year our craft stations will include Clay Creations, decorating picture frames, painting mini-flower pots, and – a Selfie booth! Face painting and balloon creations will be back by popular demand.

The entertainment will feature the Irvine Elementary Honor Choir, the Irvine High Jazz Ensembles, and the Woodbridge High Percussion Ensemble (consistently ranked as one of the best high-school percussion groups in the nation). You’ll be amazed at how talented THESE kids are, too.

Join us on Saturday to help make our 25th Young Masters the best celebration of all! See you there!
