BOOK LOVERS – CHECK OUT OUR 2FOR1 DEAL AT THE THRIFT SHOP

If you love to read, we’ve got an offer you can’t refuse. We’re currently selling TWO books for ONE DOLLAR. Mix and match hardback and paperback books – any combination! But if you buy just ONE book, it’s still going to be one dollar. So you might as well buy TWO.

We have many, many books by popular authors that are practically new. At this price you can stock up, and you’ll be ready for a cozy night of reading when the next El Nino storm hits.

This offer doesn’t apply to any books with individual price tags (for example, some specialty books will have their own price sticker) or children’s books. Children’s books are $1 for hardbound books, 50 cents for paperbacks or soft-cover books, and 25 cents for mini-books.

We also carry recent magazines at just 50 cents each.

You can use our two-for-one-dollar price for anything else – mysteries, literature, biographies, history, cookbooks, how-to books, romance novels – such a deal!

We’re ALWAYS getting new book donations, so stop in often to see what’s new on our shelves. Just remember – TWO for ONE when you’re in our book section.

Nothing opens the world to a child like books and the love of reading.  Studies have shown that having books in the home plays an enormous part in school success.  At Assistance League of Irvine, we’re all about making sure kids have a level playing field for success in school – and that includes books of their own.

We give each Operation School Bell student an age-appropriate book of their choice, plus a dictionary for each family.  And where do these books come from? From YOU, our generous donors and thrift shop patrons!

Each year we hold an annual Book Drive to collect new and gently-used books for these students.   The Irvine year-round schools start up in August, so our Book Drive is starting RIGHT NOW!

We supported over 800 students last year through Operation School Bell – so as you can see, we need LOTS of books! We’re particularly looking for books on the middle school or high school required reading lists.  You can drop off your book drive donations at the thrift shop during any time than we are open.

Help us encourage the love of reading in this new generation through our book drive.  And many, many thanks to ALL OF YOU who make it happen!

Our newest gift idea!

iStock_000009799796MediumDid you know that the ALI thrift shop has GIFT CERTIFICATES? These come in $5 denominations and are a perfect solution for those situations where you need an affordable gift. Like these:

  1. You belong to a Bunco group where everyone has to bring a token door prize to award during the evening.
  2. Your 8th grade daughter wants to have a sleepover birthday party, and you need party favors.
  3. The kid down the street, who has been sleeping on his parents’ couch ever since he graduated from college five years ago, because he’s “writing a screenplay,” finally moves into an apartment, and you want to give him something to send him on his way. (You give his parents a bottle of champagne, however.)
  4. You’re the church youth group advisor/band mother/drill team chaperone or some other type of adult volunteer for a high-school group, and need a unisex-type gift or prize for the kids, that isn’t food.

See how easy this could be? Just visit the thrift shop and tell the cashier you want to buy some GIFT CERTIFICATES. (And while you’re at the shop, reward yourself with a little something, too!)

We need your help! ONLY YOU can do this & make a difference!

mdday_color_logoVote for Assistance League – Make A Difference Day All-Star Award 2014!

Every year, USA Weekend Magazine and the Points of Light Foundation sponsor “Make A Difference Day,” a national day of service.  And to honor particularly compelling service projects, they’ve created a contest – the “Make A Difference Day All-Stars” contest for a $10,000 prize (awarded by the Gannett Foundation). You may not realize this, but Assistance League of Irvine is one of 120 Assistance League chapters across the nation.  And the National Assistance League organization has been chosen as one of the finalists for this prestigious award.  The winner will be selected by an on-line vote – so we need your votes to win! (More about how to vote, in a minute.)

We were selected because of our national 2013 Children’s Book Drive, in which 93 Assistance League chapters, including Assistance League of Irvine,  collected 103,000 books for children in schools, foster programs, and shelters.  That’s an average of 1,100 books per participating chapter!

We thank all of you who donated books to us for this book drive and helped make it such a success.  NOW we’re asking all of you to VOTE for us, to help National Assistance League win the All-Star prize!

You can vote for us at:   http://makeadifferenceday.com/vote-now.  Voting is open from now until March 4,  and is limited to ONE VOTE PER DAY.

As they used to say in the old days, vote early and often (i.e. daily).  Help Assistance League win the All-Star prize!

Small is Beautiful on Valentine’s Day

valentines day hearts picture (18)Valentine’s Day is a challenging holiday.  Up until the age of 12, it’s pretty straightforward – hearts, candy, handmade Valentine’s cards for all your relatives.  Then love strikes, and it’s never the same again.  From then on, Valentine’s Day gifts fall into two categories:  the Grand Romantic Gesture (a solitaire diamond in a heart-shaped box; Super Bowl tickets; dinner in Paris; a Ferrari), or the Small but Meaningful Gift.

The Small but Meaningful Gift is especially useful if you’ve just started dating someone, are hoping to start dating someone, want to communicate with your teenager, or made a New Year’s resolution with your spouse to save for a new refrigerator.

Since this is a blog about a thrift shop, we assume our readers are looking for ideas for Small but Meaningful gifts:

– DVDs! EVERYBODY has a favorite movie.  (Particularly good for someone-you-are-hoping-to-date, because it would be really inconsiderate of the recipient not to invite you over to watch the movie.)

– BOOKS! Everybody also has a favorite author, or at least a favorite genre.  Just don’t buy a cookbook for someone who’s dieting, or, because we obviously sell used books, a book that’s inscribed on the title page, “To Andrea – Happy Valentine’s Day 2003.”

– CUDDLY PETS! No, not a REAL pet, because this present is a surprise, and in spite of all those stories where the little girl or boy opens up a birthday box to find a puppy inside, a real pet should never, never, never be a surprise.  But cuddly stuffed animals are perfect.  They’re huggable, kissable, can go anywhere, and make people happy when they look at them.

– HOBBY AND CRAFT SUPPLIES! These can be anything from cooking gadgets to scrapbooking materials to sports equipment.   Your Valentine will be thrilled, even if you are privately thinking that no one needs 15 different cheese graters.

And remember to check out our special hand-made Valentine cards, created by our own members in our Thursday night “Crafters” group.  One of these unique cards would go perfectly with your Small but Meaningful gift.

Working out with books

reading-newspaper-while-riding-stationary-bike“Twice a week I go to the gym and ride the stationary bicycle.  so I’m always looking for “gym books” that I can read while I exercise.  I like mysteries, thrillers, romances, historical fiction – you name it.  (Plot lines where the heroine decides to start working out and then transforms her life/meets Mr. Right/gets a job in Paris are especially good for this.)”

The thrift shop is  GREAT place to find a gym book! Most of Assistance League of Irvine’s paperbacks are 50 cents or $1 – way cheaper than even Costco!  At these prices, if you spill your water bottle all over the book, it won’t matter.  ALI ALWAYS has new books coming in, so check out the book section and stock up.
