Blog readers – Help Us Win Free Advertising and continue helping the community!

we-need-your-voteThe Orange County Register is giving away $2MM in FREE ADVERTISING to non-profits! HELP US WIN some of this free advertising!

We’re competing with many other non-profits for a share of these advertising dollars in the Register’s annual “Golden Envelope” contest. With our goal to return at least 67% of our revenue back to the community, our advertising budget is very small. And we don’t have to tell you that newspaper ads are expensive. More money to spend on ads in the Register (at no cost to us!) would really help us tell our story to the community, showcase our philanthropies, recruit new members, and bring more shoppers (and donations!) to the Thrift Shop. But we need your help!

All you have to do is VOTE for Assistance League of Irvine to win. You can vote once a day between now and the end of the contest on March 31. And we’re making it so easy to vote!  Just CLICK HERE to vote and then click on the big CHECK MARK. That’s all you have to do!

Every vote counts, and we sincerely appreciate your votes. Tell your friends – tell your neighbors – and help us win!

  – Our popular Mystery Discount off your entire bill! Pick a token from the Mystery Discount Jar after your items are totaled at the register. Whatever number you pick, we’ll give you that percentage off your entire purchase.

– Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 as a way to draw attention to Main Street businesses. These businesses create jobs and tie the community together. They’re staffed (like our thrift shop) by your friends and neighbors. And they’re often the first to respond when there’s a need for help in the community, because they’re part of its daily life. You’ll have Black Friday to visit the national chain stores.

Save Small Business Saturday for the ALI thrift shop! You will be dancing down the aisles happy!

Black Friday at the Thrift Store

There were a lot of stories in the media this year about stores opening earlier than ever on Black Friday.  Many stories talked about increased security and safety training, as malls and merchants tried to keep their customers from injuring each other in their rush to buy.  These don’t sound like happy shoppers to us!

I worked at the thrift shop on Black Friday – and it was a delightful day! Our customers weren’t tired, frazzled, or desperate to get their hands on the early-bird special.  Many people told us they had no intention of going to the mall, because it was too crowded and exhausting to shop there. Instead, they came to the thrift shop where there was ample parking just a few steps from the door, they had plenty of time to browse for gifts for everyone on their list, and Assistance League volunteers would even help carry their packages to the car.  What better way to get in the holiday spirit?

Now I have to be honest, and admit there are things you won’t find at the thrift shop on Black Friday.  We won’t have a 50 inch flat screen TV (even if we had one, it would never fit in the shop); an iPad Air; or the hugging Elmo doll (but check back on that one in a couple of years).  For those, you’ll still have to go to the mall.  For almost everything else you need on Black Friday, or the other 25 shopping days until Christmas, there’s the thrift shop!
