DIY ALERT – VASES!

Let’s talk about – vases. Now there’s the crystal vase you buy for a wedding present for your 2nd cousin’s daughter, who has everything she needs and is planning a destination wedding in Tuscany. Then there’s the plain clear glass vase you buy in real life, which, of course, is where the THRIFT SHOP comes in.

There are so many creative things you can do with these vases, and the thrift ship ALWAYS has a great selection at LOW PRICES. Here are just a few ideas!

  • Make a terrarium with your kids (this is a great summer vacation project). Find a vase that’s wide but not too tall. You’ll need pebbles, terrarium soil, and some tiny succulent plants. Look for detailed instructions on the internet.
  • Air plants in glass containers are very trendy now. You can grow these indoors or outdoors, and they require virtually no water!
  • Fill your vase with alternate layers of different colored pebbles and sand. This requires NO artistic talent and makes a beautiful sculpture-like piece to display on your mantel or coffee table.
  • Your vase could also hold a collection of things with sentimental value – wine corks, shells, rocks and minerals, foreign coins. It’s a great way to display these small treasures that bring back memories.
  • On a purely practical note, a vase can hold those kitchen utensils that won’t fit in the drawer, or all kinds of miscellaneous bathroom items (think Q-tips or cotton balls). And clear glass works with any style of decor.

– It’s SUMMER. Keep that vase filled with flowers from your garden!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE – IT’S NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY!

If you love comic books, you go to Comic-Con. If you love thrift shopping, you celebrate NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY (that would be WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17) by visiting the ALI thrift shop!

You probably won’t encounter costumed Storm Troopers or X-Men Mutants, but you’ll find plenty of other thrift shop fans who know we have the best bargains in town. All BLUE-TAGGED ITEMS WILL BE 50% OFF, so stock up on back-to-school clothes or dorm room supplies, an outfit for that Labor Day barbecue, shoes, and housewares.

We like to think our customers celebrate National Thrift Shop Day EVERY time they come into our shop. So shop with us on August 17 – and all the other days in the year, too!

YOUNG MASTERS ART SHOW IS COMING!

I know we’re always telling our blog readers to “Save the Date,” but this is a really SPECIAL date to put on your calendar now. SATURDAY, APRIL 30 is the 26th annual Young Masters Art Show, sponsored by Assistance League of Irvine in the Irvine Civic Center Plaza from 1 to 4 pm. This is a FREE family event with hands-on craft activities, refreshments, and a fantastic art exhibit featuring over 600 pieces of children’s art.

Irvine Unified School District art specialist teachers select one piece of art from every K – 6 classroom in the district to be showcased at Young Masters, and these young students are SO talented. The art will stay on display in the lobby of City Hall through MAY 12, but you have to be there APRIL 30 for everything else!

This year our craft stations will include Clay Creations, decorating picture frames, painting your own small wooden bird house, Pet Rocks, and our ever-popular Selfie Station! Face painting and balloon creations will be add to the fun.

Don’t miss the entertainment, which will feature the award-winning Woodbridge High jazz and percussion ensembles.

Art, crafts, music – what better way to spend an afternoon? Bring the whole family and we’ll see you on April 30!
