April 27th 6am – April 28 12pm – YOU CAN GIVE WHERE YOUR HEART LIVES

Blog readers, are you ready for the 22nd Annual IHeart OC Giving Day? This is the one time a year in a 30-hour period you can give back and it’s so easy!

April 27th 6am – April 28 12pm – YOU CAN GIVE WHERE YOUR HEART LIVES.

Our thrift shop supports about 80% of our budget. The rest has to come from donations. And the IHeartOC Giving Day is the easiest possible way to make a donation to Assistance League of Irvine. Just click on this link to the IHeartOC website and it will automatically take you to the web page where you can make a tax-deductible donation to Assistance League of Irvine.

ALL the money ALI raises supports our programs right here in Irvine. School clothing, school supplies, and eyeglasses for needy children, scholarships for single parents and high school seniors planning to attend Irvine Valley College, help for the Human Options shelter, our annual Young Masters art show, our Assisteens auxiliary that builds character and leadership skills in 7th grade to 12th grade students through volunteer activities, and our incredible thrift shop – all of these directly affect the lives of Irvine families. AND WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO CONTINUE ALL THESE WONDERFUL PROGRAMS.

We’re not an organization that sends you mailers every month asking for donations. We don’t have a “pledge week.” But we’re asking for your donation in any amount, during the IHeartOC campaign. Thank you for supporting us!

(The IHeartOC campaign is sponsored by the Orange County Community Foundation as a way to publicize non-profits in Orange County and encourage donations.)

I know we’re always telling our blog readers to “Save the Date,” but this is a really SPECIAL date to put on your calendar now. SATURDAY, APRIL 30 is the 26th annual Young Masters Art Show, sponsored by Assistance League of Irvine in the Irvine Civic Center Plaza from 1 to 4 pm. This is a FREE family event with hands-on craft activities, refreshments, and a fantastic art exhibit featuring over 600 pieces of children’s art.

Irvine Unified School District art specialist teachers select one piece of art from every K – 6 classroom in the district to be showcased at Young Masters, and these young students are SO talented. The art will stay on display in the lobby of City Hall through MAY 12, but you have to be there APRIL 30 for everything else!

This year our craft stations will include Clay Creations, decorating picture frames, painting your own small wooden bird house, Pet Rocks, and our ever-popular Selfie Station! Face painting and balloon creations will be add to the fun.

Don’t miss the entertainment, which will feature the award-winning Woodbridge High jazz and percussion ensembles.

Art, crafts, music – what better way to spend an afternoon? Bring the whole family and we’ll see you on April 30!

Is there a Baby in your Future?

According to the internet, more babies are born in August than in any other month. The theory is that people snuggle up in December when it’s cold, with the inevitable result. (Since this is southern California, I’m more inclined to believe they snuggle up in the middle of summer after they finally break down and turn on the air conditioning, but who am I to argue with the internet?)

We don’t need the internet to tell us that the ALI thrift shop is the place to go for baby clothes. Anyone who’s had a baby knows that the baby outgrows half of the clothes from the baby shower before they’re ever worn. Do not, do not, do not spend your money paying full price for infant and toddler clothing. The thrift shop has absolutely darling onesies, shirts, pants, dresses, and sweaters for a fraction of the price. We also have toys, children’s books, nursery decor, and miscellaneous baby equipment.

Going back to the internet, the website babycenter.com estimates that you’ll spend almost $14,000 on your baby in the first year. Save some of that money by shopping with ALI and put it into the kid’s college fund instead!

It’s Never Too Early . . .

Here we are in April, and that means it’s not too early to plan ahead for Mother’s Day (May 8), Memorial Day (May 30), Father’s Day (June 19), and all those bridal showers and June weddings.

I KNOW you readers are thinking, “She’s probably the kind of person who has her Christmas presents bought and wrapped by the first of October.” Not true! I procrastinate as much as anyone. Which is why I’m reminding you to start thinking ahead when you go to the ALI thrift shop!

Now there are a couple of possibilities when you visit the thrift store to look for a gift for Mom, Dad, the bride and groom, or the hostess for your Memorial Day barbeque. The first is, you walk into the shop and there it is – the perfect one-of-a-kind gift! Remember, we have new stock coming out all the time, so you need to stop in often.

The second option is that Mom, Dad, or the bride and groom have a particular item in mind that can only be found at a particular store or website. (Mom wants a bottle of perfume or Dad wants a gift certificate for a day of sport fishing or . . . you get the idea.) In this case, the thrift shop is the ideal spot to find some inexpensive little things that you can add to the gift to make it extra-special. Just wander around the shop and you’ll get lots of creative ideas. Or ask one of our volunteers for suggestions – we love to brainstorm!

And while you’re thinking ahead, don’t forget to check out our selection of gift bags, wrapping paper, and greeting cards. With ALI’s help, you’ll be ready for every occasion on your calendar!
